About 4000 operative procedures are performed
each year in the Department of Surgery.
The complete range of abdominal procedures is performed, with
the exception of organ transplantation.
Minimal invasive endoscopic surgery has been introduced.
Within the well developed vascular surgery, endoscopic procedures are
performed, as well as bypass in situ and limb vein valvuloplasty.
Beside acute trauma, all kinds of hip endoprothesis are implanted in
the Division of Trauma.
In the Division of Thoracic Surgery, lung carcinomas are treated and
esophageal procedures are performed.
Breast tumors and general surgical cases are operated upon in the Division
of General Surgery.
Several thousands permanent pace-makers have been implanted since 1969
and automatic cadioverter defibrilators are implanted since 1993, the only
ones in Croatia and in these parts of Europe.
All types of endocrine tumors are being treated in the cooperation
with the Division of Endocrinology of the Department of Internal Medicine.
Apart from the Emergency Medical Services, Subspecialty offices
exist within the Outpatient Services and endoscopic diagnostics and treatment
are performed here, as well.
The Department is an educational basis of the School of Medicine and
School of Dentistry, residency training is offered and the Board of Surgery
Examination in General Surgery is taken.
Our professors and assisting professors participate in graduate and
postgraduate education at the University of Zagreb School of Medicine and
School of Dentistry.
