Department of neurosurgery was found
in 1986. and since then it has cared for neurosurgical patients of this
Hospital, city, county, as well as of the entire the Republic of Croatia
Using the newest scientific biomedical research information applied
in the every day clinical practice was and remained the basic postulate
of the activity in this Department.
The usual neurosurgical program takes place in two well equipped operating
theatres supplied with the intraoperative microscope, ultrasound and laser
equipment. Internal video and TV system allows watching microsurgical operations
performed under the microscope from other parts of the Department, outside
the operating room. Direct measurement of the nerve cells metabolism by
using special fibreoptic microprobes makes this Department unique in Croatia
in a sense of intraoperative monitoring and brain metabolism monitoring
in severe brain trauma or hemorrhage.
Highly educated people are the biggest treasure of this Department
who are capable of performing most of the microsurgical interventions here
in the way they are performed in the best neurosurgical departments worldwide.
Mainly it refers to the cranial base surgery, cerebrovascular surgery,
as well as the spinal, both lumbar and cervical, surgery, and pediatrics
and pituitary surgery.
Annual average of this Department are about 7.000 patients examined
in our outpatient polyclinic, around 1.600 are hospitalized, and about
1.100 patients are submitted to some of the operative interventions.
The Department is the educational basis for students of the School
of Dental Medicine and postgraduate students of Medical School. The Department
is also the educational center for residents in neurosurgery from other
Croatian neurosurgical centers, as well as from other states including
those from other continents.
This Department is the“center of excellence” in treating patients with
severe traumatic brain injury, the status recognized by the Brain
Trauma Foundation, New York, USA.
Our Department is known for collaboration with a number of neurosurgical
centers from Europe and the world, and our doctors have published numerous
scientific and professional articles and participated in many neurosurgical
congresses in the world.
Under the auspices of the Open Society Foundation Croatia, Brain Trauma
Foundation, New York and the European Union the scientifical project “
Treating severe brain injury trough education and research” takes place
in this Department.
Furthermore, under the auspices of the Croatian Committee of the European
Association Medicine of Arts a part of the project “Risks and specific
health care of professional ballet artists in the Republic of Croatia”
takes place in this Department.
