The eye disease clinic, which was founded almost a hundred years ago, is one of the institutions with the longest tradition in Croatia and this area in general. In that time it was often the place where pioneers adopted and implemented various innovative laser, surgical and diagnostic procedures. So, for example, it was in this clinic, in 1954, that the first cornea transplantation was performed. In 1976 retina diseases were cured with laser devices, and in 1978 it was one of the first clinics to perform an implantation of the first intraocular lens after cataract surgery.
Today the eye clinic is becoming a modern eye clinic whose activities include a wide range of microsurgical and laser interventions. In this clinic we perform complete lens surgery using a modern facoemulsification method, cornea transplantation, up-to-date glaucoma operation and combinations of various procedures. Concerning the rear segment of the eye we have a lot of experience and tradition with classic retina ablation surgery, but we have also adopted modern surgical procedures for vitreoretinal diseases. We also perform almost all relevant reconstructive and plastic surgery on the eyelids, orbit and lacrimal ducts. Thirty years ago a children’s ward was established. It deals with the specific qualities of child ophthalmology concerning diagnostics, prevention and amblyopia and strabismus treatment.
