This department is a teaching basis of the University of Zagreb Medical School and School of Dentistry. More than one thousand oncological patients are addmitted here yearly. The same number of patients is being treated as outpatients. Annually, more than one thousand patients are treated with Co-60 radiotherapy, chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. High standard in radiotherapy treatment is achieved by recently installed Co-60 radiotherapy device, simulator and computer system for treatment planning.
This is the only department in Croatia today where interstitial brachytherapy is applied in the treatment of breast cancer, skin, head and neck tumours, oesophageal tumours and urinary tract cancer. Also the state of the art HDR brachytherapy remote afterloading unit has been installed for intracavitary and interstital brachytherapy.

Owing to the international cooperation programmes this is the only medical department in the Republic of Croatia where recombinant interferons are used in the immunological treatment of melanoma.

High quality nuclear medicine, ultrasound and cytological diagnostic procedures enable precise evaluation of all systems of organs in over 30000 examinations per year.

The detection of functional disorders in particular organs is made possible by the application of radiotracers in diagnostic procedures. Emission tomography (SPECT), radioimmunoscintigraphy, diagnostics and treatment of neuroendocrine tumours are among the most recently introduced techniques.

Diagnostics and treatment of thyroid diseases, especially thyroid tumours, including biochemical, immunogenetic, cytological and radiotracer diagnostics as well as radioiodine and drug treatment, should be mentioned in particular. This department is also the Ministry of Health Thyroid Diseases Reference Centre as well as Goiter Erradication Centre of the Republic of Croatia.

In the Division for clinical and experimental laboratory oncology  comprehensive laboratory procedures are being carried out. These include: cellular immunity tests in patients with  solid tumours and lymphoproliferative diseases, as well as cytogenetic analysis of kariotype chromosomal constitution in patients with solid tumours. Approximately 55000 tumour marker, hormonal receptor, immunocompetency, cytogenetic and molecular genetic analyses are performed annually.
The Department of Oncology and Nulcear Medicine is a significant counterpart in the international scientific exchange and cooperation, while the employees and collaborators are principal investigators in a number of domestic and international research projects. This activity results in the publication of  a large number of scientific and professional articles appearing in the most outstanding scientific journals. In many fields of interest this department holds the same level as similar medical institutions in the world.
