The oldest clinic in 150 years of history
of the University Hospital “Sestre milosrdnice” is the Department of Internal
Medicine. It raised from the first internal department in this region established
in 1875. Today it is the largest health institution of this kind in Croatia,
an institution of great expertise and scientific achievements in contemporary
medicine where many patients from Zagreb and all of Croatia have been treated.
During 1999 there were 7851 hospitalized and 89 069 ambulatory patients.
In subspecialised departments there have been lots of specialised procedures
performed ( for example 11 500 hearth catheterisations, 10 090 gastroenterologic
invasive procedures, 9930 dialyses etc. )
The first coronary care unit in this region was established in 1971
as part of the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and in 1972 the Laboratory
for Cardiac Catheterisation began its work, where throughout the decades
even the most difficult patients underwent these procedures. Today at the
division all contemporary invasive and non invasive procedures are being
performed, such as endovascular stenting of coronary and peripheral arteries,
as well as the most recent carotid stenting. During 1999 in this institution
the largest number of coronarographies, PTCA’s and implanted stents has
been done in comparison to other non private institutions in Croatia. Almost
every day the number of urgent interventions in myocardial infarction raises
because in this Laboratory there is an organized round the clock stand
by service for emergent interventions in patients with acute myocardial
infarction
( primary PTCA and coronary stenting ). At the moment it is the only institution
in Croatia withthis kind of aid.
For decades the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases
has been the leading institution in Croatia in the field of endocrinology.
Activities of this department include all aspects of modern endocrinology.
Teamwork and successful cooperation with neurosurgeons and neuroradiologists
have crucially improved managing endocrinologic problems. The Center for
Diabetes has been recognized countrywide with one of the leading roles,
and it also participates in international expertise and scientific activities.
The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology performs all contemporarily
invasive and non invasive ( interventional ) procedures ( ultrasonography
of the abdomen; gastroscopy; colonoscopy; biopsy of the liver, stomach
and intestines; cytopunction of live, pancreas and abdominal masses; endoscopic
retrograde and percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography ) including the
whole number of interventional procedures: endoscopic haemostasis, praecancerosis
removal, colon and stomach polypectomy, biliary stone exstraction, biliary,
pancreatic and oesophageal stenting ( the first selfexpanding metal oesphageal
stent was built in 1999 at our Division ); oesophageal and colonic stenoses
dilation, pancreatic pseudocyst drainage, as well as abdominal abscess
drainage. Regarding the number of ERCP and interventions like stenting
and biliary stone extractions we are the leading institution in Croatia.
We perform about 430 procedures per year, mainly interventional ( 250 extractions,
100 implanted stents ). Being 24 hours on call we are able to manage the
acute gastrointestinal bleeding with great success.
The Division of Nephrology and Dialysis gained great experience in
treating patients with acute and chronic dialysis. In this division other
techniques are also built up, such as haemofiltration, haemodiafiltration,
combined haemodiafiltration, plasmapheresis, imunoabsorbtion and haemoperfusion.
Patients with multiorgan failure are handled with continuous methods of
dialysis. There are a section for peritoneal dialysis, a polyclinic and
a nephrologic laboratory. This division is the basic institution of the
“Pliva University of dialysis” and this cooperation resulted in numerous
scientific and expertise achievements.
The Division of Haematology manages problems of haematology and oncology
with a special interest in coagulation related problems.
In the recent period the Division of Emergency Care has been known
to handle even the most complex problems of the intensive care medicine
and by that acquired a lot of medical experience.
Over the decades education of medical and stomatology students as well
as nurses and medical technicians is being held at the Department of Internal
Medicine.
